State Rep. Timothy Horrigan letter:

Before the coronavirus crisis, my Republican New Hampshire House colleagues described all attempts to do anything for those who are not wealthy as "socialism" and/or "communism."

We Democrats were constantly warned that New Hampshire would become a failed society like Venezuela with empty grocery shelves if we tried any socialist programs. Apparently, Republicans believe Venezuela is the only country where socialism has been tried. But it's been tried lots of places, including China.

China is still run by Communists. It's an oppressive place in many ways and I'm glad I don't live there. But it's not a failed society. Its people are extraordinarily creative and hard-working. In just a few decades, China grew from a Third World society to the second biggest economy in the world. My community of Durham, by the way, has many Chinese residents thanks mostly to UNH's strong relationships with various Chinese institutions. I am honored to have them as my neighbors and my constituents. I do not feel honored when our President insists on calling COVID-19 the "Chinese virus." Regardless of where it started, it's everyone's virus now.

China was hit first and hit hard by the virus, but they are recovering strongly. They are, in fact, already getting back to some semblance of normal. Their effective response was from the bottom up, not just from the top down. The Chinese have been criticized by our President for acting slowly, and certainly they could have moved even quicker than they did. But they did move quickly, and they warned the rest of us as early as December.

We Americans are all taught in 3rd grade that communism is a system where the government controls everything. However, it is actually corporations who control almost everything in Communist countries like China. Government per se (aside from the military and the police) is vestigial. China's dictator Xi Jingpin is the President of China, but his main title is Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, and he is also the Chairman of the Chinese Military Commission.

Not unlike President Trump, Chairman Xi keeps a high profile and has even built a "cult of personality" around himself. However, Xi is ironically more like a typical corporate executive than Trump is. Xi's public statements are polite and and impersonal. His messaging is vague and lacking in detail, but it's consistent from day to day. And, Xi never talks about Xi— unlike Trump who never talks for very long about anything other than Trump. In short, Xi acts like a typical Western corporate CEO.

In the USA, the corporate sector controls more and more every year. Our huge American corporations have not necessarily responded effectively to the COVID-19 crisis. After just a few days of unexpected disruption, they have already begged Congress (successfully) for free handouts totaling trillions of dollars. The corporate sector has admittedly responded more effectively than the federal government, however, but that doesn't mean we should make government weaker. We actually need to make our government stronger, and more small-d democratic, at both the state and national levels.
